Felwoods is a game of treacherous journeys in deadly but wondrous lands.
This is a game built on two richly-developed concepts:
- Efficient but Sufficient - Tests are only for actions that are risky and possible, players roll a d20 under their most-relevant attribute in order to succeed. In combat, you must also roll above your target's AC to hit.
- High Support - Players can roll-up a unique character (including tables of names for each of the 6 heritages), in a minute or less. Referees will find tools for creating and running adventures, monsters, and magic items.
The game is brought to life by the fantastic art of Warwick Goble.
Compatibility: This is an OSR game in the sense that it could run "Keep on the Borderlands". As with all OSR games, some conversion may be necessary, but it has been kept as minimal as possible, and explicit guidance is given within the rules.
What all is inside?
- 4 Classes with 8 talents each (Warrior, Thief, Cleric, Mage)
- 6 Heritages that each provide a unique feature (Human, Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Goblin, Orc)
- Tables for rolling PC names.
- Adventuring gear with prices.
- Armor & weapon traits (E.g. "Smash (d4), if this weapon misses due to armor, it still deals d4 damage")
- Guidelines to spend massive amounts of treasure on commissioning magic items, creating spells, building structures, etc.
- Advancement by a series of post-game questions. (Although XP-for-GP could easily be swapped in if you prefer.)
- 6 Schools of magic each featuring a cantrip and 8 spells. Magic is GLoG-style Magic Dice.
- Simple journey & camping mechanics, including weather tables. Healing is slow, and requires days of rest. Cooking fresh meals will speed up the process!
- Rulings for common exploration situations to expedite resolving uncertainty.
- Reaction tables for first meeting NPCs, as well as parley/threat attempts.
- Combat rules, including a wound table for those who fall below 0 HP.
- A 3d20 table of adventure seeds.
- A rapid-outlining process for adventures "off-the-cuff."
- "Build-a-monster" section, including stat-lines by HD, d12 traits/desires tables, and 20 unique traits for monsters. You can also give monsters PC weapon effects.
- 13 Potions, 20 Trinkets, 10 Rare Arcana, and roll-tables for inspiring new Arcana.
- The Six Thrones of Werdholt, an example backdrop including 6 areas and 4 faiths.
- The Cryptwood, an example adventuring region in the Werdholt setting.
- 1-Page reference sheet with the most important tables for Referees.

This is wonderful. Awesome work.
I found a typo on the magic user character:
"If an MD"
Glad you like it! And thanks for the careful eye.
My wife's an editor, and says this one actually falls under a special rule for abbreviations. "When an abbreviation follows an indefinite article, the choice of a or an is determined by the way the abbreviation would be read aloud."
Really dig it. Its a slimmed down and light weight "d20 roll under" system without gutting the game down into an Into the Odd hack. In a handful of pages it has the mechanics, a rudimentary setting, some basic tables to get you going and art to set a vibe. It's the kind of thing I would want printed in a zine format in a box set with a couple of dice sets, a pencil and some flash cards for character sheets that you can pop in a backpack and play at the drop of a hat at a local shop.
That would be awesome to put together some day! In the middle of a master's at the moment, but perhaps a summer project.
