Lost Fable - Early Edition
A downloadable TTRPG
Dangerous are the roads, dark are the waters,
demons roam freely, and hope seems a sharp thing,
as likely to cut ourselves as our foes...
Why Lost Fable?
Lost Fable is a game of Hope in wicked times, with core rules focusing on simple-but-sufficient adventure mechanics, player creativity, and a world changing as the seasons pass.
A complete section for Referees is included, focusing on the essentials of Refereeing, guidelines for building adventures, monsters, and treasures, and even a cooperative world-building game to play with a group before the game!
Personally, I wanted a game for my family to play, a game that emphasizes hope and heroism despite the looming darkness. It's also been a dream of mine to fully write and illustrate my own RPG.
The game is designed to be highly compatible with B/X style games, such as Old School Essentials, Dungeon Crawl Classics, etc. Adventures for those games can usually be run with little need for conversion, aside from spells.
Core Features
- Four customizable and mixable classes.
- Champions - Master unique combat tactics, and pull off daring stunts.
- Tricksters - Press your luck and become an expert of the subtle arts.
- Summoners - Wield your light to heal, harm, or summon spiritual allies.
- Mages - Study and call on 8 unique schools of magic.
- Gain experience after each session with a simple series of questions.
- Death is a choice you might make! Unwounded heroes have the option to make a last stand when they fall to 0 HP, securing some victory with their sacrifice.
- Pursue creative and social labors as the seasons pass. Become a meaningful part of your village!
- Change the course of history itself.
What Will be in the Final Edition?
Anyone who purchases the Early Edition will also get full access to the Final Draft, including...
- Professional Editing.
- More artwork!
- A full campaign setting.
- Expanded Referee tools for running a world of darkness and heroism.
Planned release: Fall 2025
Why the Sale?
All of my projects thus far have been released for free, (though I have run fundraisers in the past). I'm currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Education to become an Intervention Specialist. In short, I want to help struggling kids learn to read and do math, so they can pursue their own dreams. I'm currently working in education, but to take this next step, I need to go back to school myself!
While Financial Aid can help a good amount, I also need a few classes of undergraduate prerequisites, and the costs pile up. The goal for this game is to help me reach the $1500 mark to help pay for the prereqs.
Thanks for your support and understanding!

Will this be published under creative commons once released?
I haven't fully taken the time to consider that yet, but I'm open to the idea!
This is fantastic
Any advice for adding new spells? Is there any existing magic systems that would port over easily?
The Magic Dice system is pulled straight out of GLoG, so I have some really good news for you! There are about a billion GLoG wizard schools, which should translate almost straight across, but may need some tuning for the system.
Here's a huge (but still incomplete) list: https://attnam.blogspot.com/2018/08/d50-glog-wizard-schools.html?
As long as you remember to scale spells with Dice and Sum, you can make just about anything work.
Awesome, thank you.
One more question. Are blessings permanent unless switched with an action?
Yep!
I love this and want to run it. Any chance a bestiary is on the way?
The Referee section has guidelines for quickly putting monsters together, but no official bestiary is planned. That said, almost any OSR bestiary will work. I personally use the Monster Overhaul, but if you want a free one, the BFRPG bestiary are also excellent.
I think the only major difference is the Unified Save, which is based on HD. That *will* be on the Rereree Screen I'm hoping to make.
No worries, my B/X Advanced bestiary is always on hand. Was just wondering because I love original the takes on classes and would love to see that personal touch on monsters!
